Show us Your Type London Typographic poster design submission
Show Us Your Type is a project focusing on type and cities. Design studio Superfried was invited to submit a typographic poster design for their London exhibition. The brief couldn't be simpler, typographically represent London. The reality of trying to answer the brief was a lot more challenging!
For the design a minimal and geometric approach was adopted. Although the typography would reveal the location, I wanted it to also connect with something truly iconic and synonymous with the great city. The initial idea for the design featured a typographic representation of a classic London bus. However, a bit of research revealed this idea had been realised before, so it was back to the drawing board.
Continuing with the public transport theme, potential routes emerged based on the classic tube. With the O's of London forming a tunnel and the remainder the tube train, this proved to be a very clean, bold and dynamic solution which was far stronger than my original idea.
The submission made the cut for the final 80 posters selected, which were exhibited in the atrium windows housed within the stunning architecture of Central Saint Martins – part of the new University of the Arts London. To promote the typographic design, animation was the logical solution.
